Bhutan is a nation that has given happiness a new meaning. Smiles on the faces of children, security to women, respect for themselves and satisfaction in hearts is the first priority of Bhutan. They have set an example of these things by bringing in the term ‘Gross National Happiness’ in the book of terminology. They have not let anybody and anything affect them, their culture, their traditions or the rich natural beauty they are blessed with.
Talking of the natural beauty, Bhutan is drenched in nature in all possible forms. The towns of Bhutan are not the ‘brick and mortar’ jungles but the real ones with trees and flowers and valleys and streams and hills. It has quite a few getaways that compete with each other in rich Mother Nature, Temples, Dzongs etc. Monasteries in Bhutan are a must visit as well. Few of the getaways in general that are not worth skipping are:
- Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan, is the perfect example of the Bhutanese respect for their traditions. Being the capital, one expects it to be another city with skyscrapers, advanced transportation, malls and luxuries. But one holds the breath when this capital city stands tall with simplicity. The houses here are still with slanting roofs and doors still multicolored with dragons engraved on them. The markets are still on the stone paved streets and the roads are still bordered with open grasslands and valleys. Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan offers multiple temples, Monasteries, Dzongs, Museums and Gardens.
- Paro, the most amazing town of Bhutan in terms of beauty, is known for the rich presentation of its culture. Being close to Thimpu, it is easily accessible and becomes an important site if one does not have the time to visit whole of Bhutan. Taktsang Monastery, one of the best monasteries of Bhutan, is situated here. Along with it, one can enjoy the beautiful architecture of Rinpung Dzong and Drukgyel Dzong.
- Bumthang feeds the souls of pilgrims and the adventurers. Widely accepted as ‘The spiritual heart of Bhutan’, Bumthang offers few of the most religious and respected temples. Jambay Lhakhang, Thangbi Goemba, Tamshing Lhakhang are few of the breathtaking temples that carry connections to the religious spirits of the ancestors. Bumthang also has jointure of four valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor that add tints to the beauty of Bumthang.
Bhutan is a world away from the world. It carries some of the best and the rarest things in its heart and in a very different makeup. Just walk into the nation, let you eyes see the sunset and sunrise, let your skin feel the brushing of the leaves, let your feet experience the bliss of leaving footprints on this blessed land, let your heart pound with joy with this first experience- it is then that your definition of holidaying will absolutely change.
